Thy Will Be Done

Suffering in Gethsemane

Text from the King James Version of the Bible

Music and Additional Lyrics by Vaughn W North

Luke 22:40-46

Christ leaves the remaining apostles and leads Peter, James and John to a separate location within the Garden of Gethsemane.  He then goes alone into the garden and suffers for the sins of all mankind, asking the Father if it is possible to let this cup pass from Him.

“And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly:
and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood
falling to the ground.”
Luke 22:44

Text:

Then cometh Jesus with His disciples to Gethsemane; And He saith unto them:

“My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death.  Tarry ye here, and watch with me.”

And He withdrew a little further, and fell to the ground and prayed,

“Father, all things are possible with Thee, Take away this cup from me.

Nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt.”   And He suffered,

”Father...Nevertheless, Thy will.”

Then He cometh and findeth His disciples sleeping, and saith:

“Watch ye, and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.”

And again He went away and prayed, “O my Father, if it be possible

Let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I will;   But as Thou wilt.”

And He suffered, “Father...Thy will be done…Thy will.”

And He cometh unto the disciples

And findeth them asleep...sleeping... and saith:

“What, could ye not watch with Me one hour?”

Then Jesus went away …               [Christ] ”Father, forgive them.”

Then Jesus went away...                 [Christ] ”Give them Thy strength.”

Away and prayed, “Oh my Father, If this cup may not pass away from me,

Except I drink of it, Thy will be done.”
